The Capital Region BOCES Region 7 Odyssey of the Mind Competition comprising of over 680 students and 98 teams from all over the Capital Region will take place on Saturday, March 3 at the Shenendewhowa High School East in Clifton Park.
Students competing Saturday will come from Albany Academy of Boys, Bethlehem, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Cohoes, Duanesburg, Middleburgh, Mohonasen, Schoharie, Scotia-Glenville, Sharon Springs, Shenendehowa, South Colonie, Voorheesville and Watervliet.
The Shenedehowa High School campus will team with creative kids who are hoping to win the first step in making it to the Odyssey of the Mind 2012 World Finals. This year’s participation in the competition is the largest in more than 20 years.
“These students have dedicated months to devising solutions to one of five problems posed by Odyssey of the Mind,” said Capital Region BOCES Program Manager for Special Student Services Mindy Iannotti in a statement. “Not only do they have to solve the problem, but they also have to be the most creative, take risks in their solutions and work as a team.”
Students will also incorporate their own skills and interests into the solutions. This could mean singing, playing instruments, skating or gymnastics or anything they want as long as it aids in solving one of the following problems:
1 – Ooh-Motional Vehicles: Teams will design, build and run vehicles that will drive a course
encountering 3 different situations.
2 – Weird Science: Teams will present a performance about a team of scientists on an expedition.
3 – To Be or Not To Be: Teams will create and present an original musical performance with their
own spin on Shakespeare’s famous line.
4 – You Make the Call: Teams must design and build a structure using only balsa wood and glue that
will balance ad support as much weight as possible presented in a performance with a mathematics
theme.
5 – Odyssey Angels: Teams will create and present a performance in which teams travel throughout
places where they encounter negative situations, changing what they find into positive situations.
