Applications available for DEC Environmental Education Summer Camps

The application is now posted online for the Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Education Summer Camps.

The DEC Environmental Education Camps offer campers experiences in sportsman education, games, lessons, hands-on activities, swimming, hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities. Through these activities, campers will learn about forests, water quality, nature and more.

There are four different camps kids can attend, Camp Colby, Camp DeBruce, Camp Rushford and Camp Pack Forest. Campers will participate in discovery groups and will complete six lessons. These lessons include group dynamics, explorations of different habitats and human impacts on the environment.  Science, problem solving, games, journal keeping and wildlife activities are also part of what campers will experience.

Camp starts on July 1, 2012 and goes until August 18, 2012. Campers can attend multiple times during the seven, week-long sessions.

Groundbreaking for Multi-Sports complex

ALBANY- On Tuesday, April 17, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony at the University Athletic Field on the UAlbany campus.

The ceremony is for the new Mutli Sports Complex bneing built there. 

Everyone is welcome to attend. Parking is available in the SEFCU parking lot.

Local athletes represent NYS at Alpine Skiing Eastern National Championships

Local athletes represent NYS at Alpine Skiing Eastern National Championships

Over the weekend, local high school students qualified and represented New York State at the Alpine Skiing Eastern National Championships.

The championships were held in Attitash, N.H. in both team and individual score. The ladies team score was fourth overall and the mens score was third overall.

24th Annual Stair Climb

24th Annual Stair Climb

ALBANY- The 24th Annual Stair Climb to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Northeastern New York will be held on Thursday, March 8 at the Corning Tower. Over 400 people are expected to race up the 42 floors.

Registration is available as an individual or as a team. Medals will be awarded for the fastest time, winner of the Firefighter challenge and top overall male and female finishers.

Survivor party and photos will be taken after the event. Registration begins at 4 p.m. The race is from 6-9 p.m.

Big Brothers Big Sisters chosen as Charity of Choice

CDPHP employees will begin their 2012 Charity of Choice campaign with an employee night and check presentation on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Albany Devils hockey game.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been selected as this year’s Charity of Choice and the company is challenging CDPHP employees to become either a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Being the charity of choice, a yearlong fundraising campaign will be launched including opportunities for employees to give back to the community. At this year’s kick-off event, the Albany Devils will take on the Adirondack Phantoms at the Times Union Center. The check presentation before the game will start at 4:45 p.m.

Skatefest will take place Jan. 21 at Empire State Plaza

Skatefest will take place Jan. 21 at Empire State Plaza

Skatefest will take place at the Empire State Plaza skating rink on Sat. Jan. 21 as part of U.S. Figure Skating’s National Skating Month.

The event will be hosted by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) in conjunction with their partnership with the Lake Placid Regional Winter Sports Committee.

2002 Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes and 2006 Olympian Emily Hughes will be at the rink with dozens of local skating instructors to offer free skating instruction to skaters.

There will be lessons for first time skaters and those who want to improve on their skating skills. Free skates and hot chocolate will be provided and Albany Devils mascot Devil Dawg will be in attendance.

SEFCU, New York Air National Guard, East Greenbush Chiropractic and NYSUT will sponsor the event.

Siena basketball players visit with children at Albany Med

Siena basketball players visit with children at Albany Med

Siena basketball players will visit with children and their families at the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center during the day Monday.

The men’s basketball team will visit the Ronald McDonald Family Room to make arts and crafts, play games and speak with children and their families. The program is part of a partnership between Siena Athletics and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
